Established since 1829, Bollinger is still family-owned, well-known for elegant and complex Champagnes. The House vineyards represent more than 170 hectares with a majority of Grands Crus and Premiers Crus, 60% of them are the property of Bollinger, quite a rare fact in Champagne. The wines are Pinot Noir dominated.
The Cellarmaster aims to express the full array of aromas through the barrel ageing of several crus. Bollinger is the only house to have a resident cooper in situ to take care of more than 3500 barrels only dedicated to Bollinger Champagnes. Another singularity are the reserve wines which are aged in magnums under cork for many years to create outstanding wines in the unique Bollinger style.
In 1976, Bollinger Vintage was re-named Grande Année. Then in 1997, it became La Grande Année - 'The Great Year' - a name simple enough to illustrate its exceptional status, because only truly extraordinary years become vintage at Bollinger.
A distinctive blend between a great vintage champagne and a red wine from an exclusive plot - the legendary 4 ha steep hillside vineyard Côte aux Enfants. Here the grapes are on a chalky rich soil exposed South-east and tilted towards the sun at 30 degrees. This unique vineyard is one of the few to contain extremely rare ungrafted vines, which produce more intense and flavourful wines with better ageing potential. La Grande Année Rosé is a rare treat and a true Bollinger.
Vinification takes place exclusively in small old oak barrels (20 years old on average). Riddling and disgorging are performed entirely by hand, and take place after ageing on the lees in bottles with natural corks.
“Born from the addition of five percent of La Côte aux Enfants red wine into the white La Grande Année blend, this fine rosé delights with its sweet fruity appeal of freshly crushed strawberries, apricot tart, candied fruit and orange peel. Rather fruit-forward and highly youthful for the time being, there is much more aromatic complexity to surface over time. The fine quality of the red wine of the year can be sensed on the palate, where the tannin structure feels firm but extremely elegant. Its mouthfeel is juicy with an attractive rounding oiliness to the texture. The wine is free of the common vegetal austerity of the year, instead it shows the richness and deliciousness of its sun-kissed harvest year. The fine fruit quality and seductively silky tannin structure ensure its great ageworthiness. ” EssiAvellan.com Mar 2024
96/100 William Kelley – RobertParker.com “Bollinger's 2015 Brut La Grande Année Rosé was disgorged in May last year with seven grams per litre dosage. Offering up deep aromas of orchard fruits, blood orange, mandarin rind and peach mingled with nuances of coffee, praline and fino sherry, it's medium to full-bodied, pillowy and layered, with a broad attack that segues into a vinous palate framed by high levels of structuring dry extract that makes its presence felt on the sapid, nutty and penetrating finish. Given the skin maturity and inherent structure of the year, the Bollinger team elected to include only 4.5% of still red wine in the blend, a comparatively low percentage.” RobertParker.com Mar 2024
18.5/20 – Jancis Robinson MW “Pale, slightly gris salmon pink (a little paler than the Billecart 2012 Elisabeth Salmon rosé tasted alongside). Heady, mushroomy, off-dry, sumptuous Bollinger gloriousness on the palate. I wonder what the dosage is, and whether the richness comes mainly from the fruit and oak? Finishes dry, but with wonderfully soothing impact on the palate. Relatively gentle mousse. Really gets to the deepest part of the throat. Sensational!” JancisRobinson.com Apr 2024
