At a Glance

Established in 2002 in the town of Tenterden, Kent, Chapel Down is one of the longest-running producers of English wine. Although officially established in 2002, the history of viticulture on the site dates back to the late 1970s when the first vines were planted. Today, the estate still encompasses the original plot planted in the 1970s, but has since expanded its acreage under vine throughout the North Downs and beyond, with over 1,000 acres under vine. While the majority of the grapes are sourced from their own vineyards, Chapel Down also source high-quality fruit from several long-term partner vineyards across Kent, Sussex and Essex.

The Chapel Downs estate currently grows Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Bacchus varietals on south-facing chalk and clay soils that benefit from a warm maritime climate. The soil composition of the North Downs, where the vineyards are located, is a continuation of the same geological chalk and clay formations found in Champagne. The chalky soil helps retain heat, allowing for optimal ripening of the grapes, while simultaneously providing excellent drainage to prevent the vines from becoming waterlogged. Led by Richard Lewis, Chapel Down employs a holistic approach to viticulture management, prioritising cultural methods to minimise the need for pesticides and herbicides. The vineyard team uses an innovative approach to managing the estate, utilising data to inform their decisions, from planting new vines to managing existing ones.

The season received sufficient rainfall, allowing the vines to achieve optimal nutrition levels, along with sustained dry and warm weather in the summer, which enabled the grapes to reach full ripeness. The slightly cooler weather in September and October ensured that the grapes did not overcook and allowed for a slow ripening period, providing the wine with its varied and complex profile.

The Grand Reserve is a traditional-method sparkling wine made from 60% Chardonnay, 28% Pinot Noir, and 12% Pinot Meunier. Each of the varietals in the blend brings something unique to the wine, with the Chardonnay contributing elegance and fruity notes. At the same time, the two red varieties add greater body and cohesion.  Only the best fraction of the juice is used in the creation of this wine, with the must undergoing cold fermentation in stainless steel tanks followed by full malolactic fermentation. The wine undergoes maturation in the tank for 6 months before being bottled, where it then undergoes an additional 3 years of lees ageing. A small percentage of the wine comes from reserve stocks, which have been aged in barrels to provide further complexity and depth. All of the wine undergoes at least a year of bottle ageing before it is released.

The resulting product is a rich, complex, yet elegant sparkling wine, exuding enticing notes of ripe apples, fresh red berries, and toasted brioche. The coolness of the 2019 harvest provides the wine with much-needed acidity and freshness to balance its fruity notes. Chapel Down Grand Reserve 2019 is great as an aperitif or paired with mushroom risotto.

The exceptional quality of the wine has garnered both national and international recognition, having been awarded a gold medal at the Wine GB 2024 competition and the IWC 2023 awards
