At a Glance

Château Cap de Mourlin is one of the longest-standing in Saint-Émilion. The first mention of the Château and the family dates back to a wine sales contract from 1647, extracted from the register of the jurade, which highlights the family's extensive legacy in the region. With such a long history of winemaking in Bordeaux, the Capdemourlin family has passed down their passion and knowledge for thirteen generations, with the Château still remaining family-owned and managed to this day.

In the 20th century, the Château underwent a round of modernisation under the stewardship of Jean Capdemourlin, who was instrumental in the reconstitution of the Jurade of Saint-Émilion in 1948. His contributions to the wine community were recognised when he was awarded the Légion d'Honneur. He embarked on a comprehensive renovation of the property, introducing modern winemaking techniques and facilities, including a new vat room, an air-conditioned malolactic fermentation area, and a barrel-ageing cellar.

Today, Château Cap de Mourlin remains a family-owned estate, with Jacques Capdemourlin and his sons, Thierry and François, overseeing its operations. The estate spans 14 hectares on the northern slopes of Saint-Émilion, benefiting from clay-limestone and clay-siliceous soils. The estate was first elevated to the rank of Grand Cru classification in the 1955 Saint-Émilion Classification, where it remains to this day. The classification is awarded by a panel of 43 experts, with the criteria of the classification being based 50% on taste, 35% on Reputation, Advertising, and Value, 10% on Terroir, Property Tax Base, and Uniform Quality of the terroir and 5% on Methods used in Winegrowing and Oenology.

The wine is made from 65% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from vines with an average age of 34 years. The grapes are hand-harvested and then undergo whole-berry fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, followed by malolactic fermentation in French oak barrels. Fifty per cent of the wine undergoes ageing in new French oak for up to 18 months.

The result is a full-bodied wine with a silky texture, featuring notes of rich, ripe, dark fruit and complex aromas of graphite, cedar, and tobacco, complemented by firm and well-integrated tannins. Château Cap de Mourlin has an excellent ageing potential of up to 15 years.  The exceptional quality and value of the Château Cap de Mourlin has gained industry recognition, with the wine being awarded a 90-point score by Robert Parker.
