Gusbourne has a strong claim to be the producer of the UK’s highest quality wines, and is certainly one of the most widely awarded wineries in the country
They grow Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grapes predominantly Burgundian clones, across the Gusbourne Estate, with 60 hectares in Appledore, Kent and 30 hectares next to the Goodwood Estate in West Sussex. These clones yield smaller volumes of intensely flavourful fruit. The sparkling wines are all made via the traditional method and their debut vintages – Brut Reserve 2006 and Blanc de Blancs 2006 – were released in 2010 to critical acclaim and today Gusbourne is the only three-time winner of the IWSC English Wine Producer of the Year.
Alongside superb fizz they make some of the UK’s best still Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, which could pass for top quality Burgundy
The grapes are grown own Gusbourne's own vineyards on a South facing ancient escarpment in Appledore, Kent, where the soils are clay and sandy loam. the microclimate is warm and dry, with moderating coastal breezes due to the close proximity to the English Channel. The vines are hand picked, and consist of clones 95 and 548. 100% whole bunch pressed, fermentation at cellar temperature in barriques and puncheons with 10 months ageing in 20% new French oak.
Pale gold in the glass with a nose full of expressive citrus and orchard fruit character, with ripe lemon, pear, quince and a touch of honeysuckle. On the palate, the wine is ripe, rounded and brimming with bolder notes of nectarine and orange peel, yellow apple and pineapple. Buttered toast, soft spice and a creamy texture from ageing in oak barrels combine with a salty mineral note and beautiful freshness on the finish to create a balanced and complex wine.
