A finely poised vintage of one of the Rhône's great wines, Hermitage La Chapelle 2011 offers depth, elegance and a more restrained profile than some of its blockbuster siblings. A quietly expressive Syrah from a historic site. Paul Jaboulet Aîné's La Chapelle is named after the small chapel of Saint-Christophe, perched above the storied Hermitage hill - a site that Syrah lovers revere as sacred ground. While Jaboulet's history dates to 1834, the estate entered a new chapter in 2006 when it was purchased by the Frey family (also owners of Château La Lagune), who invested heavily in vineyard revitalisation and quality-driven winemaking under the leadership of winemaker Caroline Frey.
La Chapelle is a blend of fruit from multiple old-vine parcels on the Hermitage hill, notably Le Méal, Les Bessards, and Rocoules, each with distinct soil compositions, ranging from alluvial galets to limestone and granite. The 2011 vintage followed a warm spring and a cooler, more structured end to the season. It was vinified traditionally with extended maceration and aged in French oak barrels (a modest proportion of new), allowing the site's expression to take precedence over the oak signature.
La Chapelle 2011 opens with refined aromatics of blackcurrant, black olive tapenade, cracked pepper and dried violets, with hints of smoked meat and incense emerging with air. On the palate, it's medium-bodied with superb clarity and lift — black cherry and plum woven with graphite and garrigue. The tannins are fine-grained and fully integrated; the finish is savoury, mineral, and long.
A beautiful match for classic Rhône cuisine: daube de boeuf, duck breast with black lentils, or lamb with rosemary and black garlic. It also works wonderfully with earthy vegetarian dishes, such as mushroom Wellington or grilled aubergine with tahini. Drinking beautifully now, it still has another decade of graceful evolution ahead of it.
