A delicious Italian dry white wine from leading Gavi producer il Poggio. Timorasso is a grape which almost became extinct in the 1980s ,and now has grown to a mighty 180 hectares, mostly in the Colli Tortonesi area of northern Piedmont. This is unoaked, but rich, with compelling creamy nectarine, fennel and roasted almond notes, allied to a lovely fresh, crisp finish.

Run by the energetic Francesca Poggio,  II Poggio is a family run sustainably focused winery in the heart of Gavi DOCG, a tranquil and harmonious environment on the magical Rovereto hill, located in the Piedmont region in the north of Italy. Francesca left her previous job as an estate agent in Milan to return to the family farm and grow grapes, on a prime hillside which had been donated by her relatives at the neighbouring Gavi icon La Scolca. It would be fair to say that Francesca’s wines now reach similar levels to those of her famous neighbour. The home vineyards are worked organically, with great care taken to maximise biodiversity in the vineyard.

In addition to a range of exemplary Gavis, Francesca purchases some Timorasso from a trusted grower in the Colli Tortonese further north. This is a variety that became virtually extinct before it was rediscovered, and now plantings are in the ascendancy again. This is from low yielding vines grown at 700 metres above sea levels, which gives a lovely freshness and energy  to this otherwise rich white. Vinified in stainless steel, then left on lees for 10 months to build complexity.

A seductive dry white with notes of camomile, peach , grapefruit pith, drizzled with blossom honey. A round, ripe palate leads to a crisp, mineral finish
