Pasaeli is a pioneering winery proudly representing Turkish winemaking on the international stage. Turkey is blessed with a wealth of unique indigenous grape varieties (some estimate over 1,000, compared to Italy’s 600), a Mediterranean climate, and centuries of winemaking tradition, and is, in fact, the world’s sixth-largest grape grower. The wine production scene, however, is limited to smaller, boutique producers who are mostly export-focused – among them, Pasaeli. Founded initially as a fine wine importer in 1993, the company shifted to growing and vinifying its wines around the turn of the millennium, and bottled its first wine in 2010.

Their grapes are all sourced from single vineyards around Turkey’s Mediterranean coast, near Izmir, Tekirdag and Canakkale (close to the ancient city of Troy). All of the grapes are hand-harvested, and exclusively natural yeasts are employed during the vinification process, resulting in wines that are authentic expressions of their unique terroirs. Here, the indigenous Cal Karasi grape, typically vinified as a red wine, is used to produce this distinctive white wine. The grapes are sourced from a single vineyard at an altitude of 950 metres, ensuring a wonderful freshness, and fermentation is carried out in stainless steel tanks.

The resulting wine undergoes three months of lees ageing to impart body and bready complexity, presenting a very pale lemon colour in the glass. Aromas of ripe melon and hints of raspberry and stone fruit give way to a zesty palate with ample ripeness and a delicious mineral backbone. The whimsical label, featuring an octopus, hints at the perfect food match for this delicious Blanc de Noirs – try with Japanese takoyaki.
