At a Glance

The Pewsey Vale Vineyard was established at Eden Valley in 1847 producing some of Australia’s first cool climate wines.  Today Pewsey Vale Vineyard is a highly esteemed, specialist, single site estate vineyard with provenance.  Louisa Rose has been working with Pewsey Vale Vineyard for over 25 vintages and has been an imbiber of the wine for considerably longer. She knows that great wine comes from being in the vineyard; often spending time walking the rows, studying the land, vines and surrounding vegetation, and as harvest draws near tasting the grapes and keeping a close eye on the skies. Louisa, multi-award winning winemaker, wine judge and a cool climate enthusiast, has been making Pewsey Vale Vineyard wines since 1995.

There are now 66 hectares of Riesling planted at Pewsey Vale Vineyard at an altitude between 450 and 500 metres above sea level. The vineyard is planted in a generally north facing amphitheatre looking down to the southern Barossa Valley. While it is a single site there are 29 separate ‘blocks’ within the vineyard, each with a slightly different aspect and character.  The vines grow in soils officially described as podsolic and skeletal, which are shallow, rocky, sandy and are made up of decomposed white quartz gneiss and schist. Soil mounding around the roots and straw mulch are used to improve vine growth, yield and conserve moisture and soil microorganisms. Wild-fermented in stainless steel tanks and bottled young and fresh.

Pale straw with green hues. Intense aromas of white flowers, fresh limes and a hint of fine died herbs.  A long, rich palate reminiscent of limes and fresh rosemary.  The wine finishes with soft natural acidity that balances the flavour and minerality, which is delicious now or will reward medium to long-term cellaring. Enjoy with fresh oysters, seared scallops, salt and pepper squid or a tomato salad.
