At a Glance

Ridge Vineyards is a standard-bearer for thoughtful, site-driven winemaking in California, best known for its restrained, age-worthy reds from historic vineyards. The Geyserville bottling, first made in 1966, comes from a single site in Sonoma’s Alexander Valley, where vines were planted as early as 1882. These old vines, some over 130 years old, are interplanted in the traditional Californian field blend style, dominated by Zinfandel with Carignane, Petite Sirah, and Alicante Bouschet.

Ridge has long championed minimal intervention, employing hand-harvesting, native yeast fermentation, and ageing in American oak barrels (with only a small percentage of new barrels). The result is a wine that clearly speaks of its place and vintage. Winemaker Eric Baugher continues the legacy established by Paul Draper, focusing on balance, transparency, and gentle extraction rather than power for its own sake.

The Geyserville is always layered and expressive, and the current release offers deep aromatics of wild blackberry, black cherry, bay leaf, and baking spice, with notes of crushed rock and lavender. On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, with ripe dark fruit framed by fresh acidity and fine tannins. There’s a seamless interplay between the juicy generosity of Zinfandel and the structure lent by Carignane and Petite Syrah. The finish is long, savoury, and slightly saline, with a lifted edge that keeps it from ever feeling heavy.

This is a remarkably versatile food wine, equally at home with dry-rubbed barbecue ribs as it is with roast duck, grilled lamb, or a Provençal ratatouille. For a more adventurous match, try it with Moroccan-spiced aubergine or braised short ribs with pomegranate molasses.
