An elegant, delicate Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru, this wine is entirely made from grapes from the globally renowned Les Champs Gains upper hillside vineyard. Farmed according to sustainable practices and matured in French oak, this wine will exhibit a lovely mineral structure and pair particularly harmoniously with fish, and will suit extended bottle ageing very well indeed.

Domaine Roger Belland is a small producer with just over 60 acres of vines, headquartered in the picturesque village of Santenay in the southern Côte de Beaune. The domaine is now in the hands of the sixth generation, having been a family-owned concern since 1839. As well as championing lesser-known climats and premier crus, Domaine Belland vinifies grapes from some of the most celebrated appellations in the whole of Burgundy – including their holdings in Les Champs Gains, a premier cru of Puligny-Montrachet. Puligny-Montrachet itself is almost entirely given over to white wine, which consists of 99.5% of its production, and, when introduced to whites like this one, it’s not hard to see why. The Les Champs Gains vineyard is set near the top of one of Burgundy’s famous rolling hills, with thin limestone soils providing the perfect terroir in which the Chardonnay grape can thrive.
Belland’s vines are planted alongside grass, increasing vineyard biodiversity and long-term sustainability. The wine is cold-fermented in oak vats before undergoing malolactic conversion, followed by a period of maturation in both new and used French oak barrels.
The result is an incredibly taut and mineral, yet also vibrantly fruity, wine, the perfect pairing for a classic Dover sole in lemon sauce. A pale lemon in colour, the wine’s nose will initially bring a hit of fresh orchard fruit (pear, quince, green apple) before unfurling to reveal buttered toast, vanilla and cream Danish pastries. The electric minerality of the palate, derived from the limestone terroir, will give the wine incredible structure, but the soft fruitiness and creamy, smooth texture derived from malolactic conversion and French oak will ensure that this wine is multidimensional and incredibly drinkable. A wine to savour now or save for the future, Domaine Roger Belland is a producer we are proud to represent, and the Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Champs Gains is the very best of the best.
