Launched in 2015 under the stewardship of the former chef de cave, Gilles Descôtes, the Bollinger PN series was introduced to showcase exceptional terroirs and vintages of Pinot Noir within the Bollinger maison. Descôtes' concept was that each year, all four members of the Bollinger winemaking team would craft their interpretation of the best possible Pinot Noir blend. The team would then taste the wines blind, and the blend judged best by the group would be released as a special edition under the PN series.
The latest edition in this series, the PNTX 20, was created to highlight the exceptional terroir of the premier cru village of Tauxières in the Montagne de Reims sub-region of Champagne. Ideally suited for growing Pinot Noir, the terroir of Tauxières is characterised by its unique exposure and soil composition, which blends chalk and clay. The Tauxières 2020 vintage accounts for 48% of the blend, while the remaining 52% comprises reserve wine, half of which comes from the 2008 and 2012 Vintages from the grand cru plots in Aÿ.
The Tauxières component of the blend comes from two separate plots in the cru, one consisting of a very shallow layer of soil just a few centimetres above the chalk, while the other features what the team describes as pink clay. The reserve wine from Aÿ is sourced from magnums of the 2008 and 2012 vintages, which were all vinified in oak barrels. Although, as Chef de Cave Dennis Bunner remarked, most of the blend is from the former “because not all the 2008 mags were that mature”.
The two distinct plots of the Tauxières component are vinified separately, allowing the winemaking team to find the blend that provides the most harmonious profile. The proportion of wine chalk grown is distinctively fresher and more energetic, while the clay-based wine offers a rounder, more open, and mature expression. The reserve wine from the Aÿ magnums lends the blend a more earthy, structured profile, with noticeable toasted smokiness resulting from exposure to oak. Despite the exceptionally high temperatures and lengthy dry spell that characterised the 2020 vintage, the PNTX 20 has a higher dosage of 8 gm/l than one might expect, placing it firmly within the Brut classification.
The result is a Blanc de Noirs with remarkable complexity and depth. It opens with fresh citrus, white stone fruit, and quince on the nose. On the palate, vibrant red currant leads into a rich, layered texture with a hint of vinosity. Subtle hints of stewed fruit add further nuance, all carried through to a long, elegant, flinty finish.
