Château Troplong Mondot is one of the most singular and elevated estates on the Saint-Émilion plateau, occupying 33 hectares of limestone-rich vineyards surrounding the château at one of the appellation's highest points. Historically known for its opulent, age-worthy Merlot-dominant wines, the estate has undergone a quiet yet significant evolution since the early 2000s, with a focus on precision viticulture, low-intervention practices, and more restrained, terroir-expressive winemaking.
In 2001, under the direction of Christine Valette, the winemaking process leaned into traditional methods, featuring rigorous sorting, extended maceration, and élevage in a high proportion of new French oak. The result is a structured, mineral-etched expression of the vintage, balancing Merlot's richness with the freshness of Cabernet Franc and the tension of old-vine Cabernet Sauvignon.
Now beautifully evolved, 2001 reveals a complex nose of dried black cherry, graphite, tobacco leaf, and violets, with hints of cedar, cocoa, and forest floor. The palate is medium-bodied but deeply layered, with fine-grained tannins and a savoury mineral backbone that reflects its limestone terroir. There's a quiet energy to the wine, not exuberant, but persistent, elegant and long.
Ideal with aged hard cheeses or a classic dish like roast duck with spiced cherries. For a more traditional pairing, consider entrecôte bordelaise or wild mushroom ragù over polenta, dishes that complement the wine's depth without overwhelming its nuance.
