An Italian icon, and the most revered red to come from the Alpine Alto Adige. Inspired by time spent working at Sassicaia, owner Carlo Gonzaga decided to plant Cabernet Sauvignon alongside the existing Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Carmenère. The first release was in 1982, and the wine quickly built a reputation. Then, the arrival of lauded consultant Carlo Ferrini in 2000 drove quality to even greater heights, firmly establishing this beautifully refined Bordeaux-style red as one of Italy’s very best.

Items in stock will be despatched on the same day and delivered via courier. This will usually be delivered on the following working day but please allow one extra day if this is not possible. Deliveries to Scotland & non UK mainland will usually be delivered in 2-3 working days.
We charge a flat fee of £6.90 for delivery if your order is under 20kg and £10 inc-VAT if the order is over 20kg. Free delivery is available for orders above £100 (inc VAT).

Located in Trentino-Alto Adige, on the southern edge of the Dolomites, Tenuta San Leonardo is one of Italy's most esteemed and quietly iconic wine estates. Owned by the Guerrieri Gonzaga family since the 18th century, the estate's modern reputation was built under the stewardship of Marchese Carlo Guerrieri Gonzaga, one of the first Italians to train at Bordeaux's Institut d'Oenologie in the 1960s. That training, combined with the estate's exceptional terroir, led to the creation of San Leonardo, a Bordeaux-style blend that has earned cult status for its finesse, age-worthiness, and soul.
San Leonardo is typically a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère, and Merlot, sourced from alluvial, glacial soils at the foot of the mountains. The vineyards benefit from a unique microclimate characterised by warm days, cool nights, and a constant breeze from Lake Garda. Fermentation takes place in cement tanks using indigenous yeasts, followed by 18–24 months of ageing in small French oak barrels and then extended bottle ageing before release. This is not an opulent "Super Tuscan"-style expression; San Leonardo is aristocratic, intellectual, and understated in the best sense.
In the glass, San Leonardo is deep ruby with flashes of garnet at the rim. The nose is beautifully composed, featuring notes of blackcurrant, dried rose petal, bay leaf, cedar, and graphite, with hints of tobacco and dark spice. The palate is taut and medium-bodied, built around fine-grained tannins and alpine freshness. Flavours of ripe cherry, cassis, balsamic herbs, and crushed stone unfold with clarity and elegance, leading to a persistent, savoury finish.
This is a wine of quiet power and precision, best served after decanting and ideal for cellaring over 10–20 years, depending on the vintage. Pair with roast lamb with rosemary and anchovy, porcini risotto, or simply aged Parmigiano-Reggiano. It's poise and aromatic complexity also shine alongside game birds or grilled radicchio with balsamic reduction.
