Aquavit
Aquavit is a type of Scandinavian spirit that has been distilled since the 16th century. It is made from a base of either grain or potatoes and flavoured with botanicals, such as caraway, anise, fennel, and dill. Aquavit is typically clear or pale yellow in colour and has a strong, distinct taste. The word “aquavit” comes from the Latin aqua vitae, which means “water of life.” Aquavit was originally used as a medicinal spirit and was said to have health benefits. It was also thought to be a preventative against the plague. Aquavit is still distilled in Scandinavia and is an integral part of the region’s culture. It is often served as an aperitif or after-dinner drink and is used in toasting.
