Gins from around the World

Gin

Gin is a distilled alcoholic beverage made from grain and flavoured with juniper berries. It originated in the Netherlands in the early 17th century and was brought to England by William of Orange in the 1690s. Gin became very popular in England during the 18th century and was often used as a medicinal tonic. Gin is typically distilled to around 80 proof (40% alcohol by volume) and is often served with tonic water and a slice of lime. There are many different types of gin, including London dry gin, Old Tom gin, Plymouth gin, and Dutch gin. Gin is also used in a number of cocktails, such as the Martini, Gin and Tonic, and Tom Collins.
